Built around 1780, Kleivstua has welcomed travelers for more than 250 years.
As traffic across Krokskogen increased, the need for accommodation grew, and Kleivstua was transformed from a mountain farm into a coaching inn around 1807, following the new road through Sørkleiva.

Located at the top of the historic hillside, Kleivstua became a natural stop for travelers with horses and carts. Here, both people and animals could rest before continuing their journey down the steep Krokkleiva.

Over time, Kleivstua developed into a popular destination in its own right. Guests could explore the surrounding forest and visit the famous viewpoints Kongens Utsikt and Dronningens Utsikt, offering breathtaking views across Ringerike.

The area also became known for its ingenuity and activity. Both a chair lift and the historic “barrel lift” once operated in the hills, transporting people and goods up and down the steep terrain – a testament to the creativity and determination of those who lived and worked here.

As tourism grew in the 19th century, Kleivstua expanded with larger buildings and attracted visitors from across Scandinavia. The history is rich with colorful stories – from ambitious projects and rivalries to artists, travelers, and royal connections.
